Another Tough One For The Mets!

Johan gets burned again! Johan pitched a really solid game once again and the bullpen blew it. It was a really rough loss considering that the Marlins were missing their 2 best hitters (Hanley and Ugg) and Josh Johnson was not on his A game.

Johan is such a superior pitcher (by far the best in the game - NO ONE MENTION CC BECAUSE IT IS NOT CLOSE!) and he just gets burned far too often.

Perhaps, if all pitchers kept their teams' in as many games as he does, they would also get burned alot. Who knows?

Joba Pitching Much Better!

If you are watching, please not the speed of Joba's fastball. He has hit 96 MPH and players are therefore swinging poorly at his curveball. With the fastball moving that quickly, players get fooled by the curve. If Joba can keep that fastball speed up, he will be more effective.

One last Joba note: STOP WALKING GUYS!

Jody Gerut Does It Again!

After 51 homer less at bats, Jody Gerut has backed up his famed homer in the first official at bat of Citi Field with another dinger in a meaningless game between the Padres and Rockies.

That was just an attempt at cynical humor and antagonism towards the Mets and their annoying fans!

And I just patted myself on the back! Nice work me! Nice work!

Jets Eyeing Plax!

The Jets are looking into the possibility of signing Plaxico Burress. I think his talent may make such a deal worthwhile (if he is actually allowed to play).

I have always thought that once Tom Coughlin had issues with many players during his first year as Giants coach, he was told to chill out and not be as hard on the guys. I think that since then the locker room has been a bit of a free-for-all.

It is unlikely that Mr. T and Rex will allow any crap to go on in Florham Park.

I expect Burress to sit out the year, but the idea (in theory) is not a bad one.

Burress had no previous record and got unlucky that he didn't turn his safety on. He must be constantly watched so he follows team rules but he is not a Tank Johnson-esque NFL criminal heavyweight.

O' Those Inconsistent Yankees!

The Yankees have forgotten how to hit with runners in scoring position.

The Yankees are in one of those slumps where the starters pitch well but still manage to give up 4 runs and lose.

There is little to say other than the bullpen must be reworked and hopefully Phil Hughes pitches a decent game tomorrow.

Girardi even suggested that to the press (obviously not straight out) and that is nearly unheard of from a stiff guy like the Yankee skipper.

Yankee Changes In Midst Of Awful Pithing Series!

The Yankees made up a BS injury to put Wang on the DL and Brian Bruney is actually injured so he is also now on the 15 day DL.

Cody Ransom (who has been a major hitting liability) is now on the 60 day DL with a quad injury (In other words - the Yankees deemed him useless to the club!)

Angel Berroa will man the fort until A-rod comes back. He had a pretty good spring and can't hit worse than Ransom.

One final note about the transactions, Humberto Sanchez, a former big shot Yankee prospect, was waived by the team. What a bust!

And about the first 2 games. 1)Joba is failing again and again as a starter. The problem is simple. He only throws 92 as a starter which allows hitters to layoff his wicked (but always a ball) slider. At 98, hitters can't layoff the drop off the table slider because they must react faster. 2)Girardi rarely lets a reliever ever get into a rhythm.

I Just Found Out The Jets Are Picking... and The Giants Are Picking...

O, Never mind, I have no clue and neither does anyone else. Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay each have no clue and neither does Peter King.

As I have previously explained, most of what teams tell the press is a load of utter BS!

Don't believe anything other than what is said about the first pick!

And, Mel Kiper has weird hair!

Pull Out The Brooms!

With three horrific starts in the books, the Mets can now get on a plane right out of St. Louis with a whopping ZERO wins in the bag. What a waste! They should not have bothered showing up!

I now reiterate a point I made previously, Johan must pitch every fifth day!

He is now 3 days behind schedule and will continue down that ill advised path until Jerry Manuel realizes that the rest of his staff is wildly inconsistent and that Livan Hernandez should not start when Johan has rested the last 4 days - not once, not ever!

One Yankee Comment - Best Name Ever!

Heck of a name

Here is the deal, CC didn't play well and the Yankees blew a bases loaded no outs chance late in the game.

Regardless, my day was made when the A's brought a guy named Josh Outman in to pitch.

Could you get a better name for a pitcher than OUTMAN! I think not!

My new favorite player (well... at least based on name).

4 Homers Through 4!

Now, through 4 innings of the Yankees game, there have been 4 homers with the last being the craziest of them all.

Jeter hit a ball to right center field - not a spot he has tremendous power towards (most of his homers are either to left center on inside pitches and over the short porch in right. Never to very deep right center. He hit the ball to right center over 400 feet. That is unheard of!

Ouch Under The Arch!

I sure know who will be DHing when the Mets play in AL parks during interleague play! Daniel Murphy is just a really bad defensive player. This is at least the second game that he lost in the outfield with a horrific play.

As a major leaguer, a ball right at your is a challenge, but should certainly be made.

What to do about Murphy in left?

Devils Lose On Unfair Goal!

In an attempt not to be biased, I will explain the Devils defeat in the following sense: the Devils were destroyed over the first 2 periods (minus the last minute or so of the second period), but the Devils came back in the third period - absolutely dominating the game.

But it all came down to a bad clear and a pissed off Marty Brodeur in the last seconds.

The Devils did not manage to clear the puck (granted it would have been a tough one with a backhand off the short side glass) and then the puck was whirled around for a low shot by Jussi Jokinen from the point on Brodeur's glove side. The key was the whirl because it forced Brodeur to shift across the goal. This would have been easy if not for a push by a Hurricanes player moving across the ice in front of the goal. The play was a clear penalty, but there was no call.

The question of a "reasonable effort to avoid contact" is the determining factor if the incidental contact is outside the crease. To say that Jokinen made any effort is a blatant joke. It wasn't a small bump, it made Brodeur lose his balance and made him incapable of getting across in time.

Brodeur was super pissed after the game!

The Devils players essentially stopped playing with 5 seconds left - but hey, that is far less interesting to right about and just as much the reason (although less of a proximate cause of the goal).

NFL Draft BS!

According to experts, at least 80% of what is reported by ESPN and the like about which player a team will draft (aside from the occasional first pick pre-draft signing) is a load of garbage.

The bottom line is that teams intentionally leak false rumors to confuse other teams. So don't bother listening to any "league sources tell me ..." garbage from "(insert reporter name), ESPN (must be said in a slightly deep tone than the rest of report)".

The Giants will draft whomever they want and the Jets will do the same. I would not draft Mark Sanchez, but hey, that is just me. Any player the Redskins want is probably not worth much.

The Jets will hopefully trade their pick along with a 4th for Anquan Boldin, but, the price may be a bit steep to Mr. T. I think that Kellen Clemens needs a go-to guy and Boldin is worth the 1st rounder. Cotchery is simply not a number 1 - but a darn good #2.

Windy Chairs!

The above is the YES Network tour of the new stadium (it is worthwhile).

Here is a comment on the wind issue at Yankee Stadium. Everyone knows that the chippy homers that were hit over the weekend are an issue, but, the question is a solution.

The latest rumor is that the cause of the wind currents that have changed from the previous stadium is seat position. As seen in the above video, both stadiums are positions at the same angle, but to create better views, the positioning of seats has shifted. If this is the proper cause, there will be plenty of homers because it is inconceivable that the Yankees will shift thousands of seats to poorer viewpoints.

More to come...

Intensity At The Garden!

The Rangers and Caps are playing an intense game tonight at the Garden (as expected). Thusfar, the score is 2-0 Caps; however, not at the fault of Henrik. Alex Ovechkin has played like the best player in the world (he is) and is truly dominating the game. The second goal was his doing via a wondrous pass right on the stick of Semin in an easy spot.

The Rangers are getting better as the game goes on but are having trouble scoring the puck.

The game is now at the pivotal moment in a 4 on 3 midway through the second.

Yankee Stadium Thoughts!

I have a number of thoughts about the game:
First, AJ Burnett seemed incapable of making an out pitch as he only had 2 strike outs. He obviously lacked control but his stuff was clearly moving. He only gave up 3 hits but the 7 walks were painful to watch.

Second, the homerun issue with Posada in the 8th took forever. It was quite irritating that the big board at Yankee Stadium failed to show a single replay during the ridiculously long 8 and a half minute break. The umps met on the field for a few minutes before going to the replay - what were they waiting for?

Third, I have never seen a luckier bases clearing double than Cody Ransom's in the 8th.

Now, for the stadium comments:
-The line to get into the Yankee Museum was beyond long.
-The Yankees need a few people to spill lots of beer and a bunch more to pee on the floor to get that old Yankee Stadium smell back.
-The concession area is extremely close to the seats (that is phenomenal).
-Most of the loge is no longer covered by the upper deck which gave our seats a minor league feel because the stadium felt smaller.
-There is a heater over the urinals which makes for a nice experience.
-There were plenty of people working for the team to help with the confusion of finding seats and other amenities.

There is obviously a home run galore issue that may need to be dealt with. 20 home runs in 4 games is a very high number and the Yankees need to resolve the issue. It is likely a wind issue, but resolving the problem may be very complex.

SI Hockey Delights - Euro Style!

SI proved one of my most favorite hockey points of all time. The league is dominated by the Europeans.

In a poll of NHL players, SI asked "Whom would you most want to take the last shot in a shootout?"

The responses are not important except for the fact that all the players on the list are European.

If only this hemisphere could skate, pass and shoot as well or consistently as our Euro (Russians included) brethren.

Check out the poll!

The Fragile Yankees and The Johan Necessity!

The Yankees are getting thinner by the day. First it was A-rod, now it is Nady and Matsui, what's next?

The Yankees have had the age old question of age (pun intended) over the past number of seasons and this appears to be no different. Aside from Wang's incapability of throwing a decent slider thus far and the patheticness of the middle relief corps (not that any other team is good in middle relief either), the main worry among Yankee fans must be the injuries. Cano is playing well and so are Jeter, Melky and Posada, Tex is heating up and Swisher is hitting out of his shoes; however, all of those positive notes are meaningless if the Yankees don't remain healthy at the core.

As far as the Mets are concerned, Johan needs to pitch as much as possible because the other starters are ALL shaky. In fact, the second most sure thing is Livan Hernandez simply based on expectations. All that is asked of him is to eat innings and that is a virtual guarantee. The middle three are the key to the season and so far, they have been very shaky.

I'll have a report on Yankee Stadium after my Sunday visit.

Joba Issue

What to do with Joba?

Here is why Joba should be the set up guy as opposed to a 4th/5th starter.

Joba is clearly a less effective starter throwing 92 MPH than set up guy throwing 99. Aside from the fastball speed impacting the ability to hit that pitch itself, Joba is not very good at throwing his slider in the strike zone. It is less effective as an out pitch when hitters only need to worry about a 92 MPH fastball. Hitters looked silly on the slider in the past, not so any longer.

Part 2: The Yankees have no one to set up for Rivera!

Part 3: Phil Hughes could easily be the 5th starter.

Part 4: Phil Coke isn't too good!!!

One note about today's game - Mo Rivera should have been put in to get 4 outs over Coke. If Veras needed to be pulled, put Rivera in since he is clearly the best pitcher the Yankees have coming out of the pen (no dah!) and he has not worked much lately.

Arg!!!!!!!!!!!!

MLB Update...

So much for a Cliff Lee repeat performance (not that anyone expected one) - Lee starting 0-2 will send the Indians to the basement faster than Travis Hafner strikes out.

The early MVP leader in the NL is no surprise - Prince Albert Pujols is hitting just under .500 and ripping the ball powerwise.

Met fans, don't worry about the Newsday chatter mentioning the failed bullpen outing. That was the lesser pitchers to begin with. K-rod and Putz will be fine. Also, I am of the opinion that games in which the opposing closer blows the lead, the lucky team should not be disappointed if they lose in the end. Get over it! You got lucky to begin with!

Devils Falling Apart!

What The Heck Happened?

The problem is not only the offense (which is the typical issue with the Devils)

Marty Brodeur has been below average over the last nine games. He is 2-6-1 in those games and has given up at least 3 goals in 7 of the games.

The guy may have lost his edge since breaking the goalie wins record, but, cmon, you are Marty Brodeur and need to start showing up if the Devils want to get deep into the playoffs.

The Devils must get out of this funk (at least Marty has to get out of it) before the end of the season (next 2 games) or the Devils are in serious trouble.

They already gave up the 2 seed, but the time has come to start showing up!

Just What Minaya Ordered!

Against another team's ace, not too many runs could be expected. However, the pitching was certainly there with Santana and then some solid relief led by Putz and K-rod was the winning formula for the Mets on opening day.

It is good to see that Ryan Church got off to a good start because he deserves a shot to win his job back after playing really well - pre-concussion - last year.

Even though it is opening day and winning is nice, that K-rod celebration is very annoying to watch. Yes, Joba and Paps do it as well, but he gets a little more excited.

The Blog Gets A Boost As The Season Starts!

A quick note: Granted there was much to talk about in March, but nothing is like the daily intensity of the lengthy baseball season. There is a constant flow of minor stories within nearly every game and I look forward to commenting on virtually every game the New York teams play.

To continue my good streak of predictions (which began in my last post), I will pick the 8 playoff teams as well as the MVP and Cy Young winners. I WILL NOT waste my time picking the ROY because most of the time it is a guy that comes out of nowhere to win.

To start,

AL East: This division may be won or lost in April. If the Yankees come out fast (perhaps thanks to a boost from opening the new stadium) and then get the extra help when A-rod comes back, they will win the division. In all likelihood, the Yankees, Sox and Rays will all have 89+ wins. If the Yankees play above .550 ball pre-A-rod, they will get to the 96 number that will probably win this division.

Health concerns are obviously an issue for Burnett, Sabathia (he pitched a ton of innings last year), Kazmir (has only reached 30 starts in 2 of his 4 full seasons), Jon Lester (will the major increase in innings last year hurt his arm) among others. Will Mo Rivera stay healthy?

The bottom line is the the Yankees have the best lineup, but I think they will fall short and the Red Sox should take the division with a strong year from Josh Beckett and a huge boost from John Smoltz in June.

The Rays will win a lot of games and Pat Burrell's added bat should help extend the lineup; however, the pen will not come close to the success of last year and they will not make the playoffs.

The Yankees will probably get off to a slow start (like they always do), but make the playoffs entirely based on a high payroll and the ability to add talent mid-year. I expect them to win 92 games and finish 4 behind the Sox.

AL Central: This is a tight division that includes a major disappointment (Tigers), a consistent lunch pale team (Twins), a consistent team with a crazy manager (see below) and a very talented team with the incumbent CYA winner.

They can all win the division. I expect a rebound year from Carmona and the Indians to win the game. If he falters, then look for the White Sox to come through again. The Mauer injury may linger and will badly hurt the Twins.

AL West: Is this even close? Well, the A's always seem to find solid starters within and have signed or traded for some really solid guys including a stud named Matt Holliday. If they are not in the race, he will be gone by the deadline.

The Abreu pickup should help the Angels a lot and the pitching injuries won't knock them off the very tall pedestal. I thought they would win it all last year - didn't happen. Look for them to run away with the division with 93 wins and no one within 8 games.

AL wildcard: This is clearly the Yankees or Rays. For the above reasons, the Yankees will take the wild card.

The Yankees and Angels will meet in the division series again and I look for the Yankees to take the series based on the new pitching additions and the K-rod-less bullpen out west. The Red Sox should have no trouble with either the White Sox or Indians.

Based on home field and the superior pitching of the Red Sox, they will beat the Yankees in the ALCS.

AL MVP: the newcomer on the Yanks, Mark Teixeira should really benefit from the jet stream to right field at the new stadium and the countless runners on base in front of him. I expect .315 avg with 35 home runs and 135 RBI. That should take the award.

The Cy Young will go to Josh Beckett in another masterful year in his career long one year up/one year down formula.

I expect a 21-7 record with 200+ strike outs and a low 3 ERA.

More to come...
